To hear a sample of Southern dialect go to  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:RamblingMan.ogg and listen to the clip of the Allman Brothers.
This image helps show where a lot of the dialects in America are spoken. As you can see there are a couple different types of Southern dialects. I am focusing on all of them.

Survey Summary

by: Davis Byrd

In my survey I asked for some words that are used in the south. The most common words I got were “yall” and “folks”. These words most likely are in the south because they might have come from old plantations or other languages that were in the south and evolved into the southern dialect. The reason they are only in the south might be because a lot of people living here just stay here. Also it could be because if it did travel up the people don’t understand it and it just stays down in the south.

My Language Beliefs

I believe that language is very important. I think that you can tell a lot about a person by the language they speak and by what dialect they speak it in. In class we have talked about the different dialects in the US. We saw that there are many, many dialects in the US. People's dialect has to do a lot about where they live and their heritage.
